These pop tarts only require a handful of ingredients and come together in under 20 minutes! A real treat to make for your loved ones this valentine ❤️

What are pop-tarts?

Pop-tarts are little hand pies or toaster pastries that are wildly popular in the United States for breakfast. Pop tarts have a sweet filling that’s jammed between 2 sheets of pastry dough and frosted with a sugary icing topping.

You can also compare them to hand-pies, which is basically the same concept except hand pies typically do not have the frosting on top.

What ingredients do you need for these pop tarts?

There are only a handful of ingredients necessary to make these strawberry pop tarts

  • Store-bought pie dough
  • Bonne-Maman Strawberry Jam
  • Icing sugar
  • Egg wash
  • Sprinkles

To keep this recipe simple, I’ve included store-bought fresh pie dough to save you the hassle of making your own dough. If you’re a frequent baker and you have any leftover pie dough laying around, I highly recommend using it to make these pop tarts.

That’s it!

Tips for making the best Strawberry Hand Pies

Use good quality ingredients - Since there are only a few ingredients to this recipe, you want to make sure you’re using high-quality ingredients to not skimp on flavour

Use store-bought pie dough - Supermarkets nowadays offer good quality fresh pie dough and it will save you so much time and hassle than making your own!

Close your pies tightly - You don’t want any of the filing to spill out during baking, so make sure to close up the sides properly before baking

Baking time and oven temperature

Baking time and oven temperature may vary depending on the oven you are using.  All oven temperatures in my recipes are based on a conventional oven. If you bake with a fan-assisted oven, turn down the temperature slightly as these ovens tend to become hotter than a conventional oven at that temperature setting. Ovens have the tendency to deviate from the temperature you set the oven to. I would highly recommend using an oven thermometer to ensure the inside of your oven is at the right temperature. My oven for example only goes up to 160C even though I turn it up to 230C

An oven that is too hot may result in an overbaked or burnt bake, an oven that is too cold may result in underbaked and soggy bakes. Having the thermometer will not only help in getting the right temperature but also helps in determining the right baking time.

Other factors that may affect baking time

The size of your baking dish may also highly affect your baking time. A wider pan means that the batter spreads out more, resulting in it baking faster than in a smaller pan where the batter is thicker in height.

Enjoy loves xx

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet of pie dough
  • Strawberry Jam
  • 1 egg + a splash of milk
  • Icing sugar & Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Lay out your pie dough on a baking tray lined with baking paper and use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out an equal amount of hearts
  2. Add one small teaspoon of strawberry jam to the centre of half your hearts
  3. Add your egg and milk into a small bowl and mix until thoroughly combined
  4. Brush the sides of the jam-filled hearts with your eggwash and lay the other half of the hearts on top
  5. Close them carefully by pressing down the sides so the strawberry jam won’t spill out while baking
  6. Brush the tarts with egg wash and bake for 15 minutes at 180C
  7. Once out of the oven, leave to cool slightly
  8. Mix the icing sugar and strawberry jam in a separate bowl until you’ve reached the desired consistency. I would say 50gr of sugar to good teaspoon of jam
  9. Add your icing on your cooled down hearts and decorate with sprinkles
  10. Enjoy!
