Apple Crumble

Cinnamon Apple Crumble

I am the absolute biggest stan of Fall baking, apples, cinnamon, caramel, all matches made in heaven! Apple Crumble or also known as Apple Crisp is the perfect (Fall) dessert filled with jammy and crisp cinnamon apples that can easily serve a crowd. Way easier to make than apple pie and just as good, or maybe even better 👀

How is Apple Crumble different from Apple Pie?

What if I told you that Apple Crumble is way easier to make and tastes even better than Apple Pie? Apple Crumble is essentially a crustless Apple Pie with a buttery, oat-y, nutty cruncy topping, sounds good right?

Lucky for you, this apple crumble is made with just a few ingredients and comes together SO EASILY! There’s not even a need to bring your butter to room temperature, winning!

Do I really have to use the sultanas?

I get it… You’re not a fan of sultanas, you’re probably not the only one! Luckily leaving them out will not affect the end result of this recipe, so feel free to leave them out. HOWEVER, adding them here might change your mind about sultanas… They are soaked in tea which gives them an extra boost of flavour and soaking them for at least 20 minutes makes them ultra juicy and plump. I love it!

But again, you do you and you can definitely leave them out. ☺️

What apples should I use for Apple Crumble?

I would recommend a mix of 2 different types of apples, one firm, crisp and slightly tart apple and one sweeter kind. This will make sure that you have both the jammy gooey apple filling from the sweet apples and some added texture from the crisp apples. For this recipe I used a blend of Granny Smith (crisp & tart) and Elstar (sweet and crisp). Another way to play with the texture of the apples is by slicing them into different shapes & sizes, use both thin and thick slices, small and larger chunks for the best results.

Steps to make this apple crumble

Don’t worry, every step is explained to a tee in the recipe card instructions, but let me break it down in just a few steps to show you how easy it is to make this recipe.

- Step 1 (optional):
Soak your sultanas in tea to get them nice and juicy

- Step 2:
Peel, core & slice your apples, add your other ingredients and set aside

- Step 3:
Crumble together all ingredients for your topping into a crumbly dough

- Step 4:
Add your apples to a baking dish and top with your crumble

- Step 5:
Bake, top with ice cream and devour!

See? SUPER EASY

Happy baking!

Ingredients

Apple filling:

  • 6-7 Apples (a mix of Granny Smith and Elstar or Jonagold)
  • 40gr sultanas (optional)
  • Earl Grey teabag
  • 200ml water
  • 50gr brown sugar
  • 50gr granulated sugar
  • 2tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2tsp nutmeg
  • 2tbsp cornstarch
  • 1tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1tbsp lemon juice

Crumble topping

  • 80gr granulated sugar
  • 120gr butter (cold)
  • 100gr flour
  • 100gr rolled oats or old fashioned oats
  • 40gr pecan nuts, chopped (optional)
  • 1tsp salt
  • 1tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Start by boiling the water, once it boils you can pour it over your sultana’s and add the Earl Grey tea bag to steep. Leave this to sit for at least 20 minutes, you can take out the tea bag after 5 minutes of steeping
  2. Preheat your oven to 180C
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together your sugars, spices, vanilla, salt and cornstarch and set aside.
  4. In the meantime, you can peel and core your apples. I like to slice them in both small & slightly larger chunks, thin & chunky slices to get the best texture and mixture between jammy and firm apples. Add these to a large bowl and coat them in lemon juice
  5. In a large bowl, add your flour, oats, sugar, chopped pecan nuts, salt & cinnamon and mix together. Slice your cold butter into cubes and add that to the bowl
  6. To make the crumble texture, you want to incorporate the butter into the flour by rubbing the butter & dry ingredients between your fingers until it comes together. If you don’t want to use your hands, you can totally use a knife or a pastry cutter for this step
  7. The mixture should come together in a ball but should crumble apart easily
  8. Take your big bowl of sliced apples and add the soaked and drained sultanas and the sugar-cinnamon-cornstarch mixture. Make sure to evenly coat all the apples and place them in an oven-safe baking dish
  9. Top your apples with the crumble mixture and bake at 170C for 40-50 minutes or until the top has browned and the apples have broken down into bubbly jammy goodness
  10. Let it cool slightly before serving, I recommend eating it warm with a good scoop of vanilla ice cream & a good drizzle of (salted) caramel sauce
